Coach
Westfield 2006
Phillip Reamy was an honor student in the 2006 graduating class from Westfield High School. He played five years of Babe Ruth and was on five Tournament Teams with three district titles and two state titles. Phillip was the top pitcher in the 2007 Babe Ruth State Tournament. Phillip is currently a member of the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University baseball team and recently participated in the 2008 NAIA World Series in Idaho. 2008 is his inaugural year as a coach for the Fairfax squad.
Coach
Washington-Lee 1961
Yep, he’s the manager’s dad! Coach Ron Brooks (some call him Papa Brooks) has found himself on the baseball field since he was a kid. He was recognized as a notable player for Washington Lee High School in Arlington during his years there. Since then he has watched his boy compete on the diamond and later joined his son as a coach in the dugout. During that time he has become a 14-year veteran coach of Babe Ruth tournament teams. Coach Brooks has long been married to his wife and major supporter, Rosemary, who is probably used to all this baseball stuff by now, don’t you think? Yes, she is our Manager’s mom - be sweet!
Manager
Fairfax 1987
2008 is Coach Brooks’ 17th season as a Tournament Team Manager. It doesn’t stop there - his experience goes back to his teen years when he was a player at Fairfax High School and on Babe Ruth Tournament Teams when he was 16, 17 and 18 years old. Coach Brooks is recently married to his lovely, and very patient wife Maura.

Fairfax has once seen their team advance to the Babe Ruth World Series. In 1976 the Greater Fairfax 15-year-old team won their way to the World Series under the leadership of Patrick Laing. Coach Laing was the Athletic Director at Fairfax High School for over 20 years before his sudden death in 2004. Soon after his passing Greater Fairfax Babe Ruth established their “Hall of Fame” to which Coach Laing was inducted posthumously.
The roots of our Greater Fairfax Tournament Team family stretch deep. Kevin Brooks, Manager of the 2008 Tournament Team, was a player on this same team when he was a 16, 17, and 18 year old (click the photo to see larger). His time on the roster saw two trips to the State Tournament. During his time as a player and coach, he has embraced and taught one important philosophy: Winning isn’t everything - wanting to IS. Click this to see a 1985 team photo of the Fairfax crew with Coach Brooks.Twist of the New Century
When travel baseball transformed the youth baseball landscape in 1998, the Babe Ruth League took some knocks. While the pseudo-elite in Northern Virginia baseball consider Babe Ruth a second or third tier league, Babe Ruth results contradict their criticism. Study the history of the league and recent, notable victories to find the emergence of a Babe Ruth experience filled with a sense of respect, redemption, or validation. Players that found no spot available on their high school bench found themselves starters on our All Star teams. Some went on to capture a State Title or two. Many players that started on their high school varsity squad joined Babe Ruth for the rich experience and to taste more success. Other leagues played competitive ball, but without any title that lives forever.
Recent Years
During the past few years the 16-18 year old Greater Fairfax Tournament Team has seen impressive success. In 2006 the team advanced to the State Tournament in Purcelville, Virginia. The following year they returned to the State Tournament and emerged victorious against strong competition (three of four victories by a one-run margin) in Southern Virginia. Click this to see photos from the 2007 State Championship Game. As the 2007 State Champions the team traveled to Tarboro, North Carolina for the Southeastern Regional Tournament. (More photos here, here, and here)The Team Today
In 2008 the team will endeavor to secure their third straight District VI Title. Having won the 2007 State Championship the team will be challenged to accomplish the same feat with just four returning members of the 2007 roster. Returning to the team in 2008 are David Grayson, Steven Gregg, Murphy Luatua and Casey Sutton. With 2008 being his third appearance on the roster, Casey Sutton has the opportunity to become the only 16-18 year old player from Greater Fairfax Babe Ruth to ever play on three straight District VI title teams.
New names on the roster that hold the key to keeping the winning tradition alive include: Sean Burke; Patrick Gidders; Steven McDougal; Ryan Michael; Matt Newman; Brandon Spoone; Lee Strutzel; Matt Taylor; Corey Wever; Ryan Wever. Click this to see the full 2008 roster.
For five decades the Greater Fairfax team has competed in Babe Ruth Baseball. The 2008 Team is ready to continue and represent that legacy with pride and power.
This is where you will find much of the official news and information about tournament locations and schedules. UPDATED: July 18.

State Tournament at Glen Allen Stadium
We’ve uncovered some news and information about the field on which Fairfax should play during the State Tournament in Glen Allen, Virginia. The stadium hosted the 14 year old Babe Ruth World Series in 2007 and got a fair amount of media coverage. For example, the HenricoMagazine.com website says, “Glen Allen Stadium has the feel of a professional facility for fans and players. There is individual seating with cool details like the hitter and the diamond on the armrest. Two railcars add to the beauty of the ballpark. Players rave about the spacious dugouts, which are complete with private bathrooms.”The Henrico County website adds, “Welcome to Henrico County’s new, state-of-the-art Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park. The $4 million facility, which opened in March 2007, features covered bleachers with more than 600 individual seats; sunken dugouts with restrooms; a large digital scoreboard and message board; and a fully lighted and irrigated playing field engineered for quick drainage. Henrico voters approved funding for the stadium in the 2005 bond referendum.”

Arriving at Springhill Suites Hotel
After traveling a whopping 97 miles from Centreville High School to the Springhill Suites hotel in Glen Allen, Virginia (which feels a lot like today’s Loudoun County - with green suburbia vs. suburban sprawl, and all) the Fairfax Tournament Team arrives intact. Tom Gregg was there and poised for action with his Nikon when the team walked through the doors. He snapped the pics and we present them here. Click this to see our Gallery page with the photos or you can click here to see them at Flickr.com. Stay tuned for more - tons more - as we continue to file reports and photos from the 2008 Virginia State Tournament.

Team Dinner at Austin Grill
Players and coaches from the 2008 Tournament Team infiltrated the work place of Coach Del Riego on Thursday night as they dined at the new Austin Grill in Centreville. Coach Del Riego took the night off so he could join his team in their final social engagement prior to the launch of the District VI competition Friday night. With a little logistical glitch, the team found itself situated around the bar with the frantic bartender as their server. You could almost see Coach D laughing under his breath as he enjoyed being on the other side of the table rather than serving. The boys grabbed a few pics during the spicy, tex-mex chow-time - click here to see them in our Gallery page. You can also click this to see them at our Flickr.com gallery.
2008 Team Photo
Every baseball team should have a group photo - even when the guys get to be a little older. We have three photos available - click these links to see the full-size versions: High-resolution super-large photo; Medium-size image; Medium-size photo with team title (as seen to your left). You can also click the small photo to see it in our website gallery. Then click this to see the team photos at our Flickr.com gallery. Coach Ron Brooks’ photo gallery
The Greater Fairfax Babe Ruth 2008 Tournament Team hails from Fairfax County, a thriving suburb of Washington, DC in Northern Virginia.
